We’ll be working in Kalang Park off Pakenham Street on the south side of the creek on Thursday morning 08:30-11:30. We’ll be weeding in KP-17 but will also do a safety assessment of KP-24 ahead of the Community Working Bee on Sunday. We won’t be hole digging though! Our work might involve removal of risks like eye level hazards, wonky trunks etc.

Conditions

Conditions for Thursday morning (updated 23/8 17:30):
- Rain: At this stage, there’s only a 5 % chance of rain .
- Temperature: The temperature should be a mild 10-15 degrees while we are working. Like last week, it might feel a little bit cooler due to northerlies (see below).
- Wind: The wind will be mild northerlies while we are working (increasing in strength later in the morning). Having said that, we will be fairly sheltered from the northerlies at that site.
- UV: The UV index might make it to 3.0 again assuming the cloud clears – still no major concerns from that quarter though we are entering the times of year that require sun protection (hats, sunscreen etc).
- Air Quality: The air quality forecast is good.
- Warnings: There are currently no weather warnings that apply to us.
Risks to highlight
- Bring water to maintain your hydration.
- Wear appropriate clothes for the conditions – including a hat, long sleeves, closed-toe shoes.
- Hi-vis vests are recommended especially near the track. The main east-west track is used by many cyclists – some of whom ride too fast. Take care to look both ways before crossing the path eg to dump weeds.
- There are stumps, branches etc that may present trip and eye hazards.
- COVID, flu and RSV numbers have spiked. Please don’t come if you have any symptoms.
- No bull-ant incidents there so far – but please be vigilant!
Work Times
We work from 08:30-11:30 but shorter contributions are most welcome. We usually break for morning tea at about 10:00. Note that morning tea is self-catered, ie BYO. However, some team members might contribute home-cooked delicacies from time to time…
Parking
There should be parking nearby in the car park adjacent the Bowls Club (beware of the school rush 08:50-09:10).
Notification
Please let us know if you are planning to come. This helps us organise our supplies and ensures you will be notified of cancellation or other changes eg due to an extreme weather event.
Coming Up
Don’t forget our community working bee on Sunday 27/8 from 09:00 onwards.
Thanks to Ruby, Graeme and Ruth for improvement suggestions.
