The next working bee is another planned for Kalang Park on the south side of the creek and just west of the Laurel Grove bridge. We will also hand-weed a former Community Working Bee site nearby – a little to the east of the bridge:

The job is mainly hand-weeding in KP-8 – Fumitory etc at the western end and a good patch of Dichondra infested with Angled Onion at the eastern end. The spraying work has been very effective at the rear of the middle area – so only a little hand-weeding is needed in those places.
We have a few plants left in our stock – so may put some in the ground in protected spots if this warmer weather drops off.
Given we will be in the general area, we thought it would also be convenient to hand-weed the small patch along the track in KP-5 replanted in a Community Working Bee a couple of years ago. We did promise to maintain the young plants there despite the area now being a contractor zone.
We’ll meet at the KP-8 X on the map above – and move camp when necessary.
Conditions (last updated at 17:45, 20/9/2023)
- Rain: There’s a 20% chance of rain while we are working.
- Storms: None predicted.
- Wind: There will be light W/WSW winds.
- Temperature: It should be a coolish 10-13 degrees while we are working though it might feel like 2-3 degrees lower.
- UV: The sky should be partly cloudy – but the UV potentially ranging up to a possible 3 or 4 means we should be worrying about sun protection from now onwards.
- EPA Air Quality: Good.
- Warnings: None that affect us.
Risks to highlight
- Bring water to maintain your hydration – particularly as our weather heats up!
- Mozzies are about in shaded spots and still- ish air – best to have bare skin protected.
- Wear appropriate clothes for the conditions – including a hat, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes.
- Hi-vis clothes/vests are recommended especially near the track. The main east-west track is used by many cyclists – some of whom ride too fast. Take care to look both ways before crossing the path eg to dump weeds.
- There are stumps, branches, holes etc that may present trip hazards.
- COVID, flu and RSV are still around. Please don’t come if you have any symptoms.
- We have had bull-ant incidents in KP-8 and Andy and Mark both were bitten las week ! So please be vigilant! Let me know if you see any – we’ll try to fence off dangerous areas.
Work Times
We work from 08:30-11:30 but shorter contributions are most welcome. We usually break for morning tea at about 10:00. Note that morning tea is self-catered, ie BYO. However, some team members might contribute home-cooked delicacies from time to time…
Parking
There should be parking nearby at the end of Laurel Grove South.
Notification
Please let us know if you are planning to come. This helps us organise our supplies and ensures you will be notified of cancellation or other changes eg due to an extreme weather event.
Apologies
Nicky, Andy, Megan and Nic are unavailable this week.
