The plan for Thursday, 23rd November, is to do some maintenance weeding in Kalang Park towards the Pakenham Street end from the point where the creek is closest to the creek (major Brome outbreak) through to the plaque – and also along the opposite side of the track on the car park boundary in KP-24. Then, we’ll weed the newly planted area in KP-24 and, if there’s time left, more of the wilder parts of KP-24 moving south. We’ll do some leaf mulching as needed.

Our camp will be at the purple X. The red X signifies an area where Council undertook some spraying >= 4 weeks ago. The sprayed area is very obvious now (dead Panic Veldt). Anyone concerned about weeding near sprayed areas is, of course, excused from working there…
Last Week
Last week we did some maintenance weeding in Blacks Walk’s BW-35 and BW-27 and made further inroads into BW-31 (now about half done). BW-27 and BW-35 are looking great !
We got off to a coolish start after some heavy rain – the 10% chance of rain became 1000%. Then, unbeknown to us, the resurfacing of Garie St commenced. This required cars to be relocated at one point and didn’t make for the ideal working environment due to noise and asphalt fumes. Despite those trials, some excellent results were achieved !
Conditions (last updated 16:10 22/11/2023)
Weather
Rain: There’s a 5% chance of rain while we are working.
Storms/Weather warnings: No warnings for Victoria).
Wind: mild strength SSE and ESE winds while we work.
Temperature: It should be a mild/warm 15-22 degrees while we work.
UV: >7 rising to 8 later in the day.
EPA Air Quality: GOOD.
Thunderstorm Asthma Forecast: Minor risk for Central district.
Risks to highlight
- Please bring water to maintain your hydration.
- Mozzies are about in shaded spots and still-ish air – best to have bare skin protected. We have repellent available.
- Wear appropriate clothes for the conditions – including a hat, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes.
- Hi-vis clothes/vests are recommended especially near the Garie Street road access to the car-park. Please take care when on the path to dump weeds etc.
- There are stumps, branches, lumps etc that may present trip hazards and eye-hazards under twiggy shrubs etc. We have some safety glasses in the PPE bag if you feel you need them.
- COVID, flu and RSV are still around – in fact, COVID cases have risen markedly. Please don’t come if you have any symptoms.
- No recent bull-ant incidents – but please be vigilant….
- The southern part of KP-24 was sprayed by Council >= 4 weeks ago. There is not supposed to be any residual risk after a few days…
Apologies: Megan, Ruby, Julie, Bec, Peter?
