Thursday Team – Plan for 15/2/2024 08:30-11:30

We’re off to Kalang Park again this week. Depending on numbers, we’ll start in KP-5 for a quick weed of a former Community Working Bee site there – and then return to last week’s working bee (KP-8). This is all near the Laurel Grove bridge on the south side – firstly a little to the east and then to the west.

Mostly weedy grasses need to be weeded out -thanks to the good rains in early January.

Last Week

Last week, we had one of our smallest teams for a while (5 people) – just a random thing due to lots of people having other commitments (I hope!). Anyway – we did a pretty good job on the main KP-8 area visible from the track – but need to return to complete the work at the back and to the east. We also discussed patches for in-fill planting later when the planting season gets going.

Conditions

(last updated 17:30 14/2/2024)

Rain: There’s a 0% chance of rain on Thursday (15/2) morning.
Storms/Weather warnings: None – we have left the extreme conditions of earlier this week.
Temperature: It should be a cool-mild 12-20 degrees while we work.

Heatwave: Eastern Victoria only.

Wind: mild ESE winds becoming SSE.
UV:  >6 reaching 9 later.
EPA Air Quality: Good.
Thunderstorm Asthma Forecast: None – we are past the grass pollen season now.

Risks to highlight

  • Please bring water to maintain your hydration.
  • Don’t forget your sun protection (especially for the next few months!). We have some in the PPE kit if you forget.
  • Mozzies are about in shaded spots and still-ish air – plenty around due to recent rain – best to have bare skin protected. We have repellent available in the PPE bag.
  • Wear appropriate clothes for the conditions – including a hat, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes.
  • Hi-vis clothes/vests are recommended – especially along the main track. Be extra careful when crossing the track – several of the Lycra Brigade are back as well as school etc commuters.
  • There are stumps, branches, lumps and bumps etc that may present trip hazards and eye-hazards under twiggy shrubs etc. We have some safety glasses in the PPE bag if you feel you need them.
  • COVID is still around Please don’t come if you have any COVID symptoms.
  • Bull-ant bites have been recorded in the area particularly at the back of KP-8 where there’s an old stump – but there haven’t been sightings for a while. Please be extra vigilant nevertheless.
