The plan for this coming Thursday morning is to weed between the path and the creek north in Furness Park alongside the track from Main Street to Gardenia Street at the Main Street end.

The very dry weather has thinned the weeds somewhat in the site at FP-15. We used to have quite a few wildflowers there (such as Wahlenbergia/Blue Bells) – sadly the area was impacted by becoming overgrown during Covid and also due to the bridge repairs. On the other hand, the native raspberry has thrived there – this requires special handling (see risks below).
We will also send a team to hand weed any nasties reappearing in FP-14 (the area below Julie’s) – you’ll remember the eastern side of that was sprayed after our last visit there by Council. This is the area we promised to manage the weeds in after our National Tree Day there last year.
We’ll work 08:30 – 11:30 or any time between.
Last Working Bee
Last week, we did a great job weeding along the track to the north of Kalang Oval. The top-dressing was still smelly – but bearable. We didn’t quite get the whole area – but will tackle that with the noticeboard area in a few weeks.

Risks to highlight
- Please bring water to maintain your hydration – especially given the predicted heat.
- Don’t forget your sun protection (still getting up to 7 later in the day!). We have some in the PPE kit if you forget.
- Mozzies are about in shaded spots and still-ish air – plenty around due to recent rain – best to have bare skin protected. We have repellent available in the PPE bag.
- Wear appropriate clothes for the conditions – including a hat, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes.
- Hi-vis clothes/vests are recommended – especially along the main track to Gardenia Street.
- There are stumps, branches, lumps and bumps etc that may present trip hazards and eye-hazards under twiggy shrubs etc. We have some safety glasses in the PPE bag if you feel you need them.
- COVID is still around. Please don’t come if you have any COVID symptoms.
- Bull-ant bites have not been recorded in the area – though please be vigilant nevertheless.
- We will weed under and around Native Raspberries – while these are not as bad as Blackberries – similar handling is recommended – leather gloves, eye protection where necessary and long sleeves and trousers.
