On Thursday 29/8, we’ll continue last week’s hand-weeding work in KP-24 – the usual suspects, Fumitory, Panic Veldt etc. We will be down on numbers this week – so as many hands as possible would be very welcome.

Karen from Council has kindly offered to spray out the more feral parts of the site soon – in return, I offered our services to hand weed the northern part of the site around the good plants there – to save her time. She would therefore have spare time freed up to clean up any bad part of the site there too.
There should be plenty of parking available in the carpark adjacent the Bowls Club (and adjacent the work site) – avoiding the mad school rush at 09:00 +/- 10 minutes.
Last Working Bee
On last Thursday (22/8), we weeded out the northernmost section of KP-24 under quite pleasant conditions. We were pleased to find quite a lot of indigenous grasses and other plants under the weeds – which will all benefit from more light and less competition.
Conditions
(last updated 17:55 28/8/2024)
Rain: It will be cloudy with a 10% chance of rain this coming Thursday morning.
Storms/Weather warnings: Yesterday’s Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING WINDS has been CANCELLED. However, there is a warning that the winds will redevelop later today – after our working bee has completed.
Temperature: It should be a mild 10-14 degrees while we work though the “feels like” will be 3 degrees lower – so bordering on the coolish.
Wind: mild-medium strength NW winds are expected (we’ll be somewhat sheltered from them though).
UV: the cloud cover should make us immune unless sun gets thru (in that case, 3)!
EPA Air Quality: Good.
Risks to highlight
- Please bring water to maintain your hydration.
- Wear appropriate clothes for the conditions – a hat, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes.
- Hi-vis clothes/vests are recommended – especially as we’ll be working off the main track which carries a lot of cyclists.
- There are a few stumps, branches etc that may present trip and/or eye hazards. We have some safety glasses in the PPE bag if you feel you need them.
- Take care when carrying full weed buckets – that can be heavy work!
- COVID, flu and RSV are still around again in a fairly big way it seems. Please don’t come if you have any symptoms or are potentially contagious.
- Bull-ant bites have not been recorded there – please be vigilant in any case.
