Thursday Team Plan for 24/10/2024

This week, we are back to Kalang Park (KP-17) – north of the oval along the south track. We will be targeting flowering weeds, Fumitory and emerging Great Brome as priorities.

Closest parking available would be adjacent the Bowls Club (but don’t arrive at 09:00 +/- 10 min.

Last Working Bee

On last Thursday (17/10), we had a first crack at FP-11 – in the far northern corner of Furness, north of the bridge. We didn’t finish it off – but excellent progress was made.

Weeds were growing there at an incredible rate – a large number of thistles were removed.  No sign of European wasps we reported on the eastern boundary after last visit.  Nailed the onions there though – hardle any there compared to last season – testament to the painstaking effort Ruby and others put in back then. Some seed heads were bagged. One weed pile was the remains of the crown of a Black Wattle which must have blown out in one of the recent storms.

Risks to highlight

  • Please bring water to maintain your hydration.
  • The epidemic thunderstorm asthma forecast will operate during grass pollen season (01 October to 31 December).
  • Wear appropriate clothes for the conditions – a hat, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes.
    • Hi-vis clothes/vests are recommended – especially as we’ll be working off the main track which carries a lot of cyclists. Please be extra careful crossing the track with your weed buckets.
  • There are a few stumps, branches etc that may present trip and/or eye hazards. We have some safety glasses in the PPE bag if you feel you need them.
  • Take care when carrying full weed buckets – that can be heavy work!
  • COVID, flu and RSV are still around. Please don’t come if you have any symptoms or are potentially contagious.
  • No bull-ant activity is on record here – but please be vigilant.
