For Thursday 30/1, we’re continuing on in Furness Park – this time close to Main Street at FP-15 between the track and the top of the creekbank. The strip needs a maintenance weed and controlling the return of the Wandering Trad. Ruth has also reported a flowering Dietes sp to be removed and there is also a small amount of dumped concrete from the 60 Main St project to bag up.

Last Working Bee
Following our training from Cath and Nicky, we had a final session at Furness Park FP-11. We continued being very mindful of seed on weeds – cutting heads off before pulling them out – so as to help reduce the weed seed spreading from our weeding work. We also practiced being careful when taking weeds out to minimise the soil disturbance – trialling the mini trowels and other approaches.
We iced the cake by providing additional leaf litter in the barer areas to finish up the work. The hot weather we’ve had – and the further hot days expected ahead – will encourage more natural leaf litter as trees like our eucalypts drop leaves to reduce water loss and to also mulch themselves to reduce water loss from the soil.
We did leave some heavily weedy areas to provide continuity of habitat and due to our time constraints. We’ll work on those at subsequent visits when other parts of the area have improved to provide better habitat and we have had opportunity to improve safe accessibility for our team “in and under”.
