For Thursday 20/3, Blacks Walk gets a guernsey! This will involve a maintenance weed in BW-7, BW-6 and BW-1 – just west and north of the Scout Hall. BW-1 is the new area planted up in one of last year’s Community Working Bees. There is also a small Panic Veldt patch nearby in KP-17 near Pakenham Street which we’ll remove too if sufficient people are available. The usual suspects there are involved – Panic Veldt, Prickly Lettuce, European Black Nightshade etc. Given the likelihood of seed presence, we’ll snip seed off first as we go as we have been doing elsewhere. Meet at the red-X at the back of the Scout Hall.

Last Working Bee
Great results were achieved last week between the main track and the creekbank in Kalang Park. The “cunning plan” is to extend our weeding back towards the creek a metre or two each visit – removing weed seed producers as we go.
Everyone had a look at the Moth Vine coming up along the main track trying to look like our beloved Hardenbergia violacae. We’ll need to keep our eyes peeled for more. Our thanks to Mark for giving that one the coup de grâce.
Conditions
(last updated 06:25 20/3/2025)
A cool change is expected on Thursday PM following a warm Wednesday. Rain and thunderstorms are possible after 11:00 – hopefully none of that until we’ve finished for the day! Note that we do not work during electrical storms or high winds. We will monitor the warnings carefully tomorrow morning.
Rain: There is a 20% chance of rain Thursday morning at 08:00 elevating to 40% at 11:00. The probability of rain rises to 60% by 2:00PM and 80% by 5:PM- so some rain is quite likely.
Storms/Weather warnings: Nothing that affects us.
Temperature: It should be warm 23-30 degrees while we work.
Heatwave warnings: None
Wind: medium strength NNE and N winds while we work. The hill will shelter us somewhat.
UV: up to 5 while we work, so sun protection is a must. SunSmart recommends protection from 10:10 onwards.
Cloud cover: is predicted to be about 10% rising to 47% while we work (not updated for two days – the BOM site we use is down).
EPA Air Quality: Good.
Risks to highlight
- It will be quite warm so please bring lots of water to maintain your hydration.
- Trees have been dropping branches locally – seemingly more often than usual. Higher winds increase the risks – so please be aware of your exposure.
- Hi-vis PPE is strongly recommended.
- Wear appropriate clothes for the conditions – a hat, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes. More hats are on order for those wanting a Council hat.
- There are a few stumps, bumps, branches etc that may present trip and/or eye hazards. We have some safety glasses in the PPE bag if you feel you need them.
- Be careful in the carpark and if crossing Pakenham St – quite a few “silent” EVs around.
- Take care when carrying full weed buckets – that can be heavy work!
- COVID and flu might STILL be around – a lot of masks in the shops recently despite the heat. Please don’t come if you have any symptoms or are potentially contagious.
