Thursday Team 24/4/2025

For Thursday 24/4, we return to KP-3 in Kalang Park at the foot of Laurel Grove North going eastwards. The western end of the bed is pretty clean excepting the very end which needs a quick weed. The new plantings don’t need much maintenance – but do need some rain (especially the more recent plantings)! The eastern end is also reasonably good – it’s the central section that is going to be the bulk of the work…

We’ll meet at the X on the map below on the creek-side of the path (KP-2). Seeding Panic Veldt is the main culprit – so we’ll mindfully remove seed first before extracting the base of the plant. Another pest is Wandering Trad which is trying to invade new areas. Our policy will be containment there – removing elements breaking out. We need to be careful to get all of it – not leaving pieces to form more weeds.

Last Working Bee

We’ve completed what we could usefully do in BW-33 and BW-27 (excepting around the bull-ant nest Peter discovered without being stung – possibly the same colony that Tom discovered the week before!).

Tom’s niece and her husband from Gainesville, Florida lent a hand despite lack of indig plant knowledge (Caleb proving to be the nemesis of the Cocksfoot there).. They proved to be a very enthusiastic and personable couple. Not so sure that they’ll be back for another dose this week though!

Conditions

(last updated 07:00 24/4/2025)

Thursday morning should be mostly sunny with only a small chance of rain during our session.

Rain:  The probability of rain is 5% while we are working.
Storms/Weather warnings: None.
Temperature: It should be a mild 17-24 degrees (feeling a bit cooler) while we work.

Heatwave warnings: None.

Wind:  medium strength NNE becoming N winds while we work (we be somewhat sheltered from then ).
UV:  up to 3+ while we work, so sun protection is a still needed. SunSmart recommends protection from 10:10 onwards.

Cloud cover: is predicted to be about 19% dropping to 13% during the morning.
EPA Air Quality: Good.

Risks to highlight

  • Always good to bring water to maintain your hydration.
  • No bullant stings in the area – so far! Please keep alerts to the possibility in any event !
  • Trees have been dropping branches locally – seemingly more often than usual. Keep an eye out for potential risks. There is one old stag that used to host a beehive. They may have moved out of caution – we’ll keep a wide berth of that one…
  • Hi-vis PPE is recommended given the popularity of that track with other park users.
  • Wear appropriate clothes for the conditions – a hat, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes.
  • There are a few bumps, branches etc that may present trip and/or eye hazards – especially if crawling under/around. We have some safety glasses in the PPE bag if you feel you need them.
  • Take care when carrying full weed buckets – that can be heavy work! We may have a couple of weed drops for Council pick-up.
  • COVID and flu might STILL be around – around the pre-polling station recently. Please don’t come if you have any symptoms or are potentially contagious.
