Thursday Team 15/5/2025

This week, we’ll return to BW-32 near the Garie Street playground and our boardroom table for a regular maintenance weed. Some weeds have returned there including some barely recovering Wandering Trad clumps. There’s also a small area that seems to have a limitless supply of weed seed bank available – we’ll try a bit of sheet mulching there with some leaf mulch on top and see if that quietens things down a bit.

We’ll meet at the X on the map above. Surprisingly, there’s still no sign of the boundary fence going up at 10 Garie St- so we’ll need to continue to take a conservative view of where the property boundary lies. If we have time and resources, we’ll do a quick pass through BW-31 removing the most egregious weeds there.

Last Working Bee

Last week, we did an initial hand weed of KP-20. A lot of this ended up being Angled Onion weeding along with usual suspects like Couch, Ivy etc. In any event, we did a great job of slowing down weeds that got through Council’s spraying program.

Thanks too to John D who did some lumberjacking to allow us to redeploy some logs to signal the mower man and walkers not to re-enter the “goat track” through the middle of the plot – ahead of “Reveg Area” signage going up. Alas, kids found the logs very convenient for erecting a teepee type structure – so we might have to rely on the signage anyway.

Conditions

(last updated 06:30 15/5/2025)

There’s a chance of rain overnight, but a smaller chance on Thursday morning. Should be mostly cloudy/partly sunny during our session.

Rain:  The probability of rain is 10% while we are working.
Storms/Weather warnings: None.
Temperature: It should be a coolmild 10-15 degrees (feeling 1 degree cooler) while we work.

Wind:  mild strength N-WNW-W-WSW winds while we work.
UV:  up to 1+ while we work. SunSmart does not recommend protection during our working time (only from 11:50 – 12:50).

Cloud cover: is predicted to be about 77% dropping to 64% .
EPA Air Quality: forecast GOOD (but no recent data and only FAIR yesterday due to smoke).

Risks to highlight

  • Always good to bring water to maintain your hydration.
  • Bull-ants are not recorded at the site – but they have been in Alan’s patch adjacent the car-park in BW-31 – so please watch out!
  • Trees have been dropping branches locally (drought???) – seemingly more often than usual. Keep an eye out for potential risks.
  • Hi-vis PPE is recommended given the popularity of that track with other park users.
  • Wear appropriate clothes for the conditions – a hat, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes.
  • There are a few bumps, branches etc that may present trip and/or eye hazards – especially if crawling under/around. We have some safety glasses in the PPE bag if you feel you need them.
  • Take care when carrying full weed buckets – that can be heavy work! We may have a couple of weed drops for Council pick-up.
  • COVID and flu might STILL be around. Please don’t come if you have any symptoms or are potentially contagious.
