Thursday Team 5/6/2025

For Thursday 5/6: following Sunday’s Community Working Bee, we ran out of plants and so there are empty holes which need filling. Other tasks to do there are: QA the CWB planting, weeding the overflow pond, weeding a bracken area (Cath’s suggestion) and weeding the future bed abutting the track down from Waratah Cres (to the east) of its emerging onions (dormant when the spraying was done). Thanks to Megan for picking up extra plants. We will do a bit more watering too given the predicted rains have not amounted to much. In the diagram below, the green Xs denote the planting/watering areas and the red Xs denote the weeding zones.

Last Working Bee

Last Thursday 29/5, we weeded out the wilder northern reaches of the CWB bed and dug a lot of holes filling them all with conditioned water 2-3 times because it was so dry there! It was clear we needed to intervene significantly on the water side of things…

Conditions

(last updated 06:15 5/6/2025)

Today should be partly cloudy while we work.

SunSmart no longer recommends sun protection…

Rain:  There is a 5% chance of rain on after 07:00, later diminishing to 0% while we work.
Storms/Weather warnings: Nothing that affects us.
Temperature: It should be a COLD 5-12 degrees while we work because it will “feel” a couple of degrees cooler. We suggest you dress for warmth such that you can peel off a layer as you warm up.

Wind:  low strength NE/NNE winds.
UV:  up to 1 while we work, so sun protection is not essential.

Cloud cover: is predicted to be 40% dropping to 35% while we work.
EPA Air Quality: Good.

Risks to highlight

  • Bull-ants are present at the site – the known nest will be fenced off.
  • Please bring water to maintain your hydration.
  • Wear appropriate warm clothes for the conditions – a hat, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes.
  • Take care when using the steep track down from Waratah Ave.
  • Hole digging and water carrying is heavy work – go easy on yourself.
    • Hi-vis clothes/vests are recommended.
  • There are a few stumps, bumps, branches etc that may present trip and/or eye hazards in some parts. We have some safety glasses in the PPE bag if you feel you need them.
  • Take care when carrying full water buckets – that can be heavy work and slippery if water gets sloshed about!
  • The hill is steep – so watch your feet ging down hill and take your time going up!
  • COVID and flu might STILL be around. Please don’t come if you have any symptoms or are potentially contagious.
