Thursday Team 19/6/2025

This week, we are back to Kalang Park KP-5 (the bed we’ve been looking after on the south side of the creek between Laurel Grove and Main Street). The plot is due for a maintenance weed – we haven’t been there for 7-8 months. Closest parking available would be at the end of Laurel Grove (either side). Depending on turn-out and progress we’ll move westwards on to KP-8 which also needs some work – especially at the western end where invading Kikuyu needs a bit of “TLC” a setback”… Meet at the red X…

Last Working Bee

Last week we had a great day weeding up in FP-14. We were rewarded with some good news up there – natural recruitment of Coprosma etc, Dianella clumps absolutely thriving – and plans are afoot to try to merge the two beds we worked in up there.

A great day’s work – and we were joined by our former colleague Delldint for a cuppa. She sold her place on Saturday – no doubt due, in no small measure, to the parkland over the road !

Conditions

(last updated 06:20 19/6/2025)

Thursday should be partly cloudy while we work.

Rain:  There is a 5% chance of rain while we are working.
Storms/Weather warnings: Nothing that affects us.
Temperature: It should be a COLD 6-11 degrees while we work because it will “feel” 2-4 degrees cooler. Sounding like a broken record, we suggest you dress for warmth such that you can peel off a layer as you warm up.

Wind:  low strength NNE/N winds freshening later in the morning- which we are significantly protected from.
UV:  up to 1 while we work, so sun protection is not essential. In fact, SunSmart no longer recommends sun protection…

Cloud cover: is predicted to be 56% falling to 44% while we work.
EPA Air Quality: Currently consistently GOOD over the past 24 hours – but regional forecast is GOOD to FAIR due to wood heaters.

Risks to highlight

  • Bull-ant bites have not been recorded in KP-5, but please be vigilant. We have found Sugar-ants there nesting in the the NW corner of the bed of KP-5 – but they don’t seem to be aggressive like their 2.54cm cousins. However, Inch-ants have struck in KP-8 – so we need to be careful there – and will tape-off the danger zone.
  • Please bring water to maintain your hydration.
  • Wear appropriate warm clothes for the conditions – a hat (beanie or shapka), long sleeves and closed-toe shoes.
  • There are a few stumps, bumps, branches etc that may present trip and/or eye hazards in some parts. We have some safety glasses in the PPE bag if you feel you need them.
  • The hill is slippery and sodden in places – please take your time going up and down!
  • COVID and flu are STILL around and the #cases is rising. Please don’t come if you have any symptoms or are potentially contagious.
